Checking Your Car Alternator

Calling up a mechanic is the probably first thing that comes to your mind when your car won't start. When you do that, most mechanics will charge you about 50-80 bucks for just making an inspection to your alternator and battery. And that's not cheap! If you want to save money, why not try to learn how to do it by yourself?

Checking an alternator is as easy as looking at the gauges. Here are some simple tips on how to check your car alternator:

• Verify if your vehicle is equipped with gauges. The volt/amp gauge will read the alternator output for you. Test if the alternator is charging properly by opening the blower fan for the AC or heater, and other accessories that put a tension on the car alternator. Carefully observe if the gauges reduce its voltage or amperage. If the voltmeter is higher when the engine is running, it means that the alternator is charging.
• When you release the negative battery cable and crank the engine, your alternator is providing adequate voltage. Your alternator is not working properly if the engine dies when the cable is removed. 
• Turn on your engine and pay attention to your car alternator. If the bearing produces squealing sounds which become louder when you use more power, your alternator is problematic.
• If the alternator is too hot after you start the engine, it signifies that the insulation on the copper windings may be breaking down soon.
