Tips To Avoid Buying A Lemon Car

Purchasing a used car is more cost-effective than buying a new one. However, it is quite risky. If you are not cautious enough, you might end up purchasing a lemon or defective car. To prevent getting scammed, it's better to have a little basic car knowledge so that you will know if the salesman is trying to rip you off or if you are really getting a pretty good deal.

Here are some tips on how to avoid getting a lemon car.

  • Check the serial number of the car. There have been occasions when even a new vehicle has been damaged and not disclosed by the seller. Determining the car history is the first thing you need to know before buying it.
  • Ask for the car title and get information of the previous car owner such as its name and contact number. Contact the previous owner for you to know if the car has some issues before. Take note of the problem and let your mechanic check it.
  • Ask about the Technical Service Bulletins. These are instructions from the car manufacturer that alert dealerships about defects or repairs in certain car models.
  • Get all implied or expressed warranties in writing. Part of the price of the car is the warranty service in which replacements or repairs are being made. You paid for it, so you deserve to get your money's worth!
  • Inspect if the vehicle has been wrecked. If a door has to be forced, the car has probably been broken.
  • Check the bumpers, grill, wheel wells and windows for any rust. If there is a small paint bubbles in the surrounding, don't buy that car. Request the seller to punch them through firmly with a screwdriver. If the screwdriver goes through the complete piece of metal, the rust is awful and the repairs will be costly.
  • Test drive the vehicle for about 30-45 minutes. Observe the gear and make sure it shifts in a smooth manner. The brakes must not make loud and strange noises. Turn the wheel harshly to make sure the vehicle doesn't jump too much.
